“How Deep Can I Go?”

Yeah, I’m not not posting that picture. This is a screen taken from the English version of ASB with Jolyne’s final line after her HHA courtesy of williamzeppeli tumblr. That certainly is an interesting decision for that line.

But to give this a little more weight, would you like to see some of the other translation decisions? Someone was nice enough to drop a huge list of changes gleaned from promo material on the localized version onto Pastebin. It’s pretty massive, so I’m only going to post the name changes then give the links at the end. Directly quoted:

Character names seen in-game:
Jonathan Joestar
Will A. Zeppeli (Will Anthonio Zeppeli seen in menu screenshots)

I emphasize the Polnareff change to Eiffel because that’s just dumb. Might as well just name him Baguette Man with his stand Riposting Chevalier and be done with it.  “Stray Cat” to “Feral Cat” is also kind of odd considering that Stray Cat is a fairly normal term, but I’m not going to question copyright fears.

You can find the whole of this collection here for names and here for in fight dialogue.

(Thanks JoJo’s thread for posting both of these.)

I’m glad that the localization is this bad.
Is the game going to be solely in Japanese with subtitles and translations?
From the usual treatment I would have expected them to remove all Japanese and do an English dub, but that doesn’t seem to be the case after seeing the trailers.
It would be a bit weird to see Josuke saying Crazy Diamond in Japanese with Shining Diamond as the subtitle though.

    • Correct. As far as we can see, there is no dub, which means that the subtitles will not really match anything being said. Your example is dead on. “Shining Diamond” will be written under Josuke saying “Crazy Diamond.”

      • Giorno Giovanna Says:

Does that even work if you leave all the copyrighted names said in Japanese translated into something that isn’t copyrighted?
Akira will be shouting Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the translation will just be Chilli Peppers. I THINK IT’S PRETTY OBVIOUS.
But I can’t really blame them though, still you would have to wonder about the actual music labels and whether this kind of semantics is even needed at this point, since they’re clearly just playing with the translation of direct English by putting fake subtitles on.
        >“Bullets” in a dialogue translation.
        Mista: IKEEEE! SEKKUSU PISUTORUZU!
        Subtitles: GO! BULLETS!

I’m laughing harder than Jotaro will at Nukesaku.

  2. I lol’d at Baguette Man. But I will be pretty pissed if they change the name of my favourite Crusader just because.
I hope they will do something creative with Red Ruler if they are going to change it, I always laugh when anons in Jojo thread start to think of other names for him.
And who the hell is San Tan?
