This must be what it feels like to be a fanboy. Deep down, I know this show isn’t going be worthwhile. I’m justifying it to myself entirely by saying, “Well, it doesn’t outright offend me, so I guess it’s ok. I guess.” But I can’t help it because super robots. I mean, there’s going to be a Getter one and Jeeg one and a Gaiking one and a Gakeen one and a Baratak one. How many out there even knew what those last two were without having to look at the links? So I can’t help but want to watch it while also recognizing that this is a really stupid thing.
Outside of that, the show is going to run on Toei’s online channel as a series of ~10 minute shorts. It’ll be packed to the gills with super robot references that Toei has the rights to and is likely to be a long form toy commercial. That doesn’t make it that different from most other robot shows, so that’s not a big deal. I’m frankly surprised that the animation looks like they put some effort into it. I guess being a series of shorts means they can stretch that money further. If it stays as a zany, slapstick comedy and the fanservice is kept under control, it should at least be harmless.
The Tamashii Nations Event is ready to go, and robot figures are ready to be shown off. Making a big show is Bandai with their Soul of Chogokin and Super Robot Chogokin lines with a long list of figures. In the Soul of Chogokin line, there’s the new adjustable display bases displayed using Combattler, Votoms, Daimos, Daltanious, and Godmars, and we’ve got a new GaoGaiGar, the 2199 version of Space Battleship Yamato, the Macross 30 YF-30 Chronos, Hello Kitty, and Trider G7. In the Super Robot Chogokin line, we’ve got the very excellent OVA style Mazinkaiser and Shin Getter 1 with the totally sweet rocket punch and Stoner Sunshine accessories you can see above, and the real star of the show:
Super Robot Chogokin Kantam Robo from the show within a show of the same name from Crayon Shin-chan. Of all the robots in the world, Kantam is getting his figure in one of the strongest figure lines there is. I know it would be really hard to do, and you might not even want it for a display figure, but I’d love it if they have the pilot that is the miniature Kantam Robo be removable from the figure. That is an awesome place to go for a new robot figure, but I shouldn’t be too surprised. Kantam Robo does have it’s own full fledged OP after all.
There’s going to be a new Getter Robo. Excuse me. I’ll be in the corner going fucking insane with excitement, but understand. There’s going to be a new Getter Robo!
Ok, so, what does it say? This is a new show because it’s Getter’s 40th anniversary. I fully expect a forward along the lines of “In Memory of Ken Ishikawa.” It’s a collaboration between Dynamic Pro and Sentinel Co, so there’s bound to be tons of figures. The “Concept Design” is credited to Go Nagai. I don’t know if that means he’s being credited with the original idea of Getter instead of Ishikawa or the two together, or if that means he created the idea for whatever the show will be about personally. The robot designs are credited to “NINNIN (XELFLEX)” who I don’t know anything about. It’s all coming out next year. Oh, and the bottom thing in quotes says “Dino Getter.” Dino Getter was a special Getter machine robot built by the new Dinosaur Empire to keep pace with the Getter Arc team. They would later go as support to that team when they went through the portal to see Getter Emperor’s war path across the cosmos!
Do you understand? If this is anime uses that machine, it might be using that storyline. If this anime is using that storyline, then we might not just be getting a new Getter anime. We might be getting a Getter Robo Arc anime, so we might be getting an ending to Getter Robo Arc. And if Go Nagai worked on the storyline himself, that means that it’s official from Dynamic Pro.
I can’t contain it. I’ll just let you know when something else comes up. I don’t like CG Robots, but I’ll deal if this uses them. I really hope that guy who worked on Gurren Lagann that really liked Getter, I think Kazuki Nakajima [Edit: Sorry, Kazuki Nakashima], works on this.
[Edit: All right, now that I’ve had some time, I’ve gotten a few new bits of information. NINNIN is this guy. He’s a designer, a lot of what you’ll see on that Pixiv are mosters for Cardfight Vanguard, and these are his designs. These actually are the “Dino Getter” mentioned in the quotes at the bottom, so that isn’t a tease for a later Dino Getter design. These designs were used for figures at Wonder Festival this year, but the poster still bills it for 2014, so we can still probably count on the anime. It just probably won’t be Arc like I was hoping. Oh well, I’m still into it.]
[Edit 2: Man, it’s been a while since this came up. Important news! Nothing so far has confirmed this as an anime for this year of 2014. When the poster came down the pipe, we all got a little overzealous about the prospect of a new Getter anime, and I got swept up in the tide. I didn’t think this story would have so much persistence, so I didn’t change it once news stopped coming out, but since it has, I’ll be clear. There has been no confirmation or official announcement of a new Getter Robo anime. Sorry for the confusion. I’m also pretty sad about it. I’ve also changed the title to further alter confusion.]
All right. An old fashion translation patch. A group of people from /m/ alongside the guy from Oppai Missile Translations, the one who translated Mazinger Angels and Mazinger Angels Z, are working on a translation patch for Super Robot Wars GC, the first and only GameCube SRW game. As it stands, there aren’t any details other than that it’s being worked on and that you’ll have to do it through an emulator rather than somehow being able to append it directly to a copy of the disc. All the same, I’m always up for getting to play another SRW game.
Here’s the roster for the game (from Wiki):
Blue Comet SPT Layzner
Dancouga – Super Beast Machine God*
Heavy Metal L-Gaim*
J9 Trilogy:
Braiger*
Baxingar (debut)*
Sasuraiger (debut)
Metal Armor Dragonar
Mazinkaiser (OVA) (debut)*
Mirai Robo Daltanious
Mobile Suit Gundam*
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (OVA)
Saikyo Robo Daioja (debut)
Trider G7
Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh (debut)*
Ones with asterisks are the ones on the cover from what I can tell. I haven’t played any of the SRWs with the Shin vs. Neo story, so this has really got my hopes up because if it’s Shin vs. Neo…
Remember when I said that I’d be totally cool with JoJo’s related songs being remixed into console soundcard tracks, Game Boy Shine on You Crazy Diamond and things like that, because of that Sega Genesis Roundabout? Yeah, that’s apparently already a thing.
The 8-bit Smells Like Teen Spirit made me go look for a lighter.
Oh, but that’s not all. See, the JoJo’s thing is only fairly recent, but this guy’s been doing 8-bit mixes of all kinds of things, including this playlist of 164 giant robot themes. There’s a lot to sift through in there, including tons of Macross, like PLANET WAVES, lot of Gundam themes, and many favorite super robots. Now, that’s a big playlist, and I encourage you to click that link and go listen to them all, but here’s a few choice picks from me.
Sure Promise from The Big O
You Get to Burning from Martian Successor Nadesco
Theme of Combattler V
Tope! Duke Freed! from UFO Robo Grendizer
Flying in the Sky and Trust You Forever from G Gundam
And all the Getter Robo themes a man could want, including…
HEATS by Hironobu Kageyama from Getter Robo: Armageddon
The mystery creator of these has my thanks for letting me show them and may now step forward and claim their “Pretty Cool Dude” prize, because that’s totally sweet. Ideally, it’ll lead to increased interest in this idea and we’ll finally get that 70s style movie, “Getter Robo tai Gurren Lagann.”
Ever heard of the Mattel Shogun Warriors toy line? They were a couple of action figures based around some of the popular 70s super robots, including Great Mazinger, “Combattra,” Tosho Daimos, “17 Robot,” and a few others. You may have heard of a Marvel comic set with Combattler, Raideen, and Danguard Ace, which has the Fantastic Four piloting Combattler at one point to my understanding. That came about because of that toy line.
Well, it wasn’t just toys that were introduced. There were also other products like “Dragun,” the Americanized Getter Dragon, Coloring Book.
It’s no secret that we’re big Dynamic Pro fans, and by extension, big Getter fans. New Getter Robo was a really fun show to watch, I’ve featured it in Super Robot Awesome twice now only because if I did more I’d never stop using Getter, and stands as one of my favorite super robot shows of the last few years, but have you ever wondered what Ken Ishikawa thought? Well, there’s an interview waiting for you as done by Hideo Ishikawa, Ryoma Nagare’s modern voice actor.
Yep, it’s in Japanese and not translated. At least entirely. You may not have known this, but we have an English Dynamic Pro Fan Forum, Nagai Again. I should have mentioned them earlier because we need more members, but I’ve been hanging around there for a bit now. Forum member Kamon was nice enough to pay out of pocket for a brief translation of about half. Here it is:
’’Chougeki! Shin getter Robo, Ryouma Ga Kiru
Hideo Ishikawa (Ryouma’s voice actor): Hello everybody my name is Hideo Ishikawa. Once again, a new enemy has arrived. Now there’s only two episodes left, I wonder how it’s all going to end? With that said, I would like to present to you a special guest Ken Ishikawa-sensei!
Ken Ishikawa: Thanks. I’m Ken Ishikawa.
Hideo: And just like last time, we’ll talk with the director Kawagoe, thanks for coming!
Jun Kawagoe: Thanks for inviting me to come, I’m Jun Kawagoe.
Hideo: Did you watch Shin Getter Robo this time?
Ishikawa: Yes, I did.
Hideo: You’ve watched it? What do you think?
Ishikawa: It was really exciting. Not just exiting, it really had strength. I was surprised to see the powerful scenes.
Hideo: what does the director think?
Kawagoe: I’m very pleased to hear that from Ishikawa, it makes everything worth it.
Hideo: Me too. I’m glad to hear that Ishikawa liked the powerful scenes. Were they one of the things which you had extra focus on, when you wrote Getter Robo?
Ishikawa: Yes, It had to be convincing. As when the three machines combine into one, like I mentioned earlier; How do you show such an absurd thought, and make it convincing? What should the characters do? It must be the biggest challenge. When you watch anime it’s very convincing. In manga you have to show the Combination in frames, but in anime it can be shown so fluently, I think that’s very convincing.
Hideo: Is that something you’ve discussed with Kawagoe?
Kawagoe: well, we haven’t really discussed it like that. But when Ishikawa drew all kinds of designs, we all sat down, and talked about how it was going to work.
Hideo: How involved was Ishikawa in the plot? How many of the ideas were yours?
Ishikawa: They just asked me to make this and that character, and that’s all.
Hideo: Oh, so everything else were Kawagoe’s?
Ishikawa: Yes.
Kawagoe: at first, we wanted him to design the new Getter Robo, and we thought, he might as well design the new third pilot: Musashibou Benkei. And then the ‘’Kijuu’’, which arrives in the first episode.
Hideo: What do you think of Musashibou Benkei?
Ishikawa: They’ve simply taken Benkei, Musashi, and made a Musashibou Benkei.
Hideo: Yeah, pretty much. Do you also think that if you put Musashi and Benkei together you’ll get a Musashibou Benkei?
Ishikawa: I suppose.
Hideo: He’s also become a pretty memorial character, which I think Yanada (Musashibou’s voice actor) does a great job with. Have you used some of the ideas from Ishikawa’s other Manga?
Kawagoe: Yes, I’ve always wanted to make an animation for the historical inspired works of Ishikawa, like ‘’Juubei Shisu’’ I wanted to show the wooden air battleships in animation.
Hideo: Has Ishikawa watched that?
Ishikawa: Yes.
Hideo: I was very surprised to see flying battleships in the Heian-period, it’s unbelievable. Really awesome.
